Bible Bowl 2010

Stay tuned for details on the 2010 Bible Bowl where our youth will compete on their knowledge on the book of 1 Samuel. We currently have 15 youth on our Bible Bowl team. Please plan on attending and encouraging our youth during the competition. Locations to be announced soon. First round on Sunday - February 28, 2010 3:00 PM New Hope Lutheran Church in Freedom Regional Bible Bowl on Sunday - March 7, 2010 3:00 PM Perry Highway Lutheran Church in Wexford Super Bible Bowl on Sunday - March 21, 2010 Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Monroeville We are holding study sessions on Sundays in January and February and into March if necessary following the worship service. Mr. Scott Shoup and Heidi Hartge are the leaders. Bible Bowl Youth vs. Adults The Rehoboth youth have been studying the book of 1 Samuel for their Bible Bowl competition. They went on a head-to-head competition against the adults who have prepared questions for them. Heidi Hartge, questionnaire extraordinaire, lead the group with Pastor Eric, Chip and Royce as our officials. Our youth team came out on top! Good Job to everyone! Local Bible Bowl Results From Pastor Eric: I am a very proud pastor right now. I want to share with you the results of the local Bible Bowl held at New Hope Lutheran Church yesterday. Our youth did very well, and entered the final round of competition four points behind the team from New Hope. New Hope had a very strong team, if my memory is correct they only missed one or two questions in the first two rounds. Our team needed to do very well in the final round to advance to regionals, and they did better then any other team getting four out of the six possible points. That put them in a tie with New Hope for first place and both teams advanced to regionals next week. The 2010 Bible Bowl First place trophy is on display in the narthex and our youth will compete in the regional competition at Perry Highway Lutheran Church in Wexford Sunday March 7 at 3:00pm. We had a large group of folks from Rehoboth at New Hope to support the Bible Bowl team and I hope we can give them another large cheering section on Sunday. The Bible Bowl team worked very hard and did a great job we should all be very proud of them. Congratulations to everyone on the team and I can't wait for Sunday. Heidi and Mr. Shoup would like to congratulate the Bible Bowl participants! What an awesome job everyone did. Our next round will be held this Sunday March 7th at 3:00 at Perry Highway Lutheran Church on route 19 in Wexford. Winning at any level has shown your dedication and hard work. All of us have learned and benefited from studying 1 Samuel. Even if we happen to not advance any further, we have won by expanding our knowledge! In an effort to keep cleanup simple, please bring your own place settings, cups, and utensils for each in your family. The following Wednesday meals and services are scheduled: - February 24th at Rehoboth
- March 3rd at Concord
- March 10th at Rehoboth

Are you interested in preparing a special soup for this year’s Meager Meals? Three volunteers are needed each week (2/24, 3/10, and 3/24) to prepare a pot of soup. Each pot of soup should feed approximately 12 to 15 people. You may sign-up for a week (or more) on the sheet posted in the narthex or call Dennis Whalen (724-847-1421). The members of both congregations are looking forward to sharing this meal with you. Bring a friend!! A free will offering will be collected during the meal and will be designated for the Baden Food Pantry. NOTE: There will not be a meager meal on Ash Wednesday (3/17) or the Wednesday of Holy Week (3/31).

SPECIAL MISSION FOCUS FOR HAITI (Feb & Mar 2010)
With the recent earthquake in Haiti, many people are asking how Rehoboth is participating in the relief effort. Our mission committee has found an agency that will match donated funds ($1 for every $2 donated) up through March 31, 2010. This agency is Thrivent Financial For Lutherans. Rehoboth will collect donations up through the end of March to help in the relief effort. If you wish to donate, you may do so in 2 ways: Visit, www.thrivent.com/helpinghaiti and make an online contribution OR Put your money or check (made out to Rehoboth Lutheran Church) into a separate envelope and mark it Mission Committee: Haiti and the Mission Committee will make sure it gets to Thrivent. Thrivent Financial supports the following relief agencies: - Lutheran World Relief
- ELCA Disaster Response
- LCMS World Relief/Human Care
- WELS Committee on Relief
Thrivent Financial will add $1 to every $2 its members donate, up to a total Thrivent Financial contribution of $1 million. That means a potential of $3 million or more to support relief efforts: $2 million + from its members and $1 million added by Thrivent Financial. For questions or alternative ways to donate through this program, please call 800-236-3736. When promoted, say “directory” and enter ext. 83003. Any other concerns can be directed to anyone on the Mission Committee: Donna DuPont, Lori Shoup, Julie Whalen, and Pastor Eric.
Quilting Materials Needed

The quilting ladies from the Mission:Action group are searching for quilting related materials. If you know of any rest homes, hotels/motels, hospitals, or linen supply companies in the area that could save us the sheets (for quilt backings) and light blankets (for quilt fillers) that they can no longer use, we could put them to good use. Stained (but cleaned) items can even be used as fillers, while items with holes can be cut into squares for quilt tops. We could also use bed spreads (for quilt fillers), pillow cases, and drapes. If you know of any drapery or upholstery shops (even craft, fabric, or furniture shops) that have outdated upholstery samples, we could use them to make beautiful quilts. We can also use well-washed old mattress pads for quilt fillers. We are also collecting crochet thread in any color instead of yarn to tie the quilts since it is easier to pull through the quilt layers and also will last longer and is more durable than yarn. We always accept fabric donations and request that they be cotton, cotton blend, flannel, twill, or corduroy. Please keep an eye out for these items as we try to reuse and recycle many of these useful things and in turn make them into a quilt for someone in need that brings warmth on a cold night, shelter from the sun on a hot day, a bed at night, a room divider during the day, a backpack to carry belongings, and at times even a home. Lutheran World Relief (LWR – the organization where we send our quilts) has put out a plea for more quilts (and health kits) since the recent earthquake in Haiti. They have already sent over 30,000 quilts to Haiti from their warehouse and have depleted their stock. If you have the opportunity to help us out on Tuesday mornings from 9:15 ‘til noon, we could sure use your help. No sewing experience is necessary. We need help cutting fabric and tying the quilts. If you have the ability to sew and want to help, but can’t meet on Tuesday mornings, please see Leslie DuPont and she would be happy to provide you with fabric to cut or squares to sew together to make a quilt top. (During the month of May, the Mission Committee along with the Sunday School will focus on making the health kits which are also desperately needed). We also accept monetary donations which we use to purchase batting and other sewing needs as well as to send the finished quilts to LWR near Windsor, MD. We typically send out our quilts once a year, but because of the increased need and plea from LWR, we will be sending out an additional shipment of quilts in the near future. Thank you for your support, and together we can make a difference.

Live Nativity Summary

On December 19th, Rehoboth hosted its first Live Nativity. Over 300 people attended, on this cold and snowy evening. The snow provided a beautiful backdrop for 5 different scenes depicting the Christmas story. It took several months of planning and many individuals to help make this such a huge success. Julie Whalen and Heather Goncz were responsible for the costumes, Craig Wicks created the stable, Bob Morrison (Julie’s step-dad) cut out the 8-foot camels and numerous sheep (at the last minute!), Debbie Vidovich for her creative ideas and Pastor for providing the written narrative. We enlisted “non” Rehoboth members too. Cameron Davidson recorded and copied the CDs and Roy and Vicki Yeck provided Conrad the donkey, Mary the Sheep and Belle the beautiful calf. It took over 30 volunteers the night of the Nativity. We accepted non-perishables for the Baden “We Care” Food Pantry. We received 15 bags of food and $91 to be donated. Thanks to all who helped, donated or visited.

Building Expansion/Stewardship Key Leader Program Update January-2010

Jan 2010 Stewardship News - Building Expansion Building on Blessings – A Home for All. . . . . a success. Once again, thank you. As of December 6th we have received a three-year total commitment of $204,375. The Stewardship Key Leader program was focused on prayer and founded in God’s Word. If you need a good book to read on a cold winter evening, I highly recommend Ask, Thank, Tell by Charles R. Lane. Pastor Lane states in his book, “The goal of our stewardship ministry is to help God’s people grow in their relationship with Jesus through the use of the time, talents, and finances God has entrusted to them.” You may have noticed that during the campaign we tried very hard not to say how much each person should give in order to meet our goal. We encouraged each congregational member to pray for guidance on how to use the gifts that God has given to each of us. I hope that as well as achieving our financial goal that each of us has deepened our faith in our Lord. Blessings, Carol Nicoletti, Building Stewardship Chairperson Building Expansion Update The Building Expansion Committee met recently for the final review of the plans. We have met with Ralph Sterzinger, our architect, and we anticipate that the final drawings will be prepared and submitted for the purposes of the construction bids. We expect to receive bids by the end of January 2010. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any committee member. We are extending an invitation to any church member who wishes to provide a bid to any portion of the building expansion project. If you are interested in submitting a bid or need additional information, please see or call Royce W. Wilhelm at (724) 869-4104.
