C.A.S.T. - Churches Are Serving Together

Julie Whalen Coordinator

CAST is a non-profit interfaith organization seeking to bring all churches in Beaver County in unity to serve the needs of people who come to the participating churches. This united approach has been established to help families and individuals in crisis through a variety of services.

  • works to empower people to make permanent changes in their lives
  • links people with services that are already available in the community
  • is helping people referred by participating churches with food, clothing, furniture, filling out forms, information, referrals and programs to help to learn to be self-reliant.
  • has received 501 (c)(3) designation as a charitable organization and all contributions are tax deductible.
  • is a United Way Donor option organization (code number 9345)

CAST gives hope, resources, and encouragement to people which allow them to make possible changes and to rise above their present circumstances. CAST is always working as a catalyst or link to bring people and services together in a productive manner. An ecumenical board of nine persons with diverse, relevant expertise meets nine times a year to govern and monitor operations. An advisory board composed of one representative from each participating congregation meets twice a year to evaluate the work and determine recommended future support by their congregations.

Simply put, CAST's mission is "To give every person their human dignity and the realization that God loves them and is concerned with their needs."

CAST is located at 599 Rear Market Street Bridgewater, PA 15009  724.775.8191 Mary Jane Verbe email: cast@access995.com

C.A.S.T. Back to School Project

In 2007, 329 children, ages 3 to 18, received a new school outfit, a backpack, school supplies and a shoe certificate. This program has been going for 11 years now. C.A.S.T. would like to invite all participating churches to be a part of this project. They are starting this project in April since signups are coordinated with the help of the local schools. They are asking each of the churches to pledge any of the following:

A new clothing outfit for a child...i.e. a top and a bottom (you will be given a first name, gender, age, and size) - keeping in mind this is an outfit for school (no tank tops, spaghetti straps, sleeveless tops, shorts, or inappropriate sayings on shirts).

Money for shoe certificates... each shoe certificate costs $10.00. Make checks payable to CAST. They do not want you to buy the shoes, CAST has a special deal with Payless Shoes to get the most shoes for the money.

Backpacks...they especially need backpacks for the 3 - 8 year old age group. Please purchase backpacks that can hold school supplies such as binders, folders, and such, not the small cutesy ones.

School Supplies...notebooks, 2 pocket folders, binders, binder paper, construction paper, and elementary school lined paper with the dashes in the middle for younger kids.

There will be a pledge sheet out in the narthex if you'd like to sign-up to purchase any of the above items. Deadline for the pledge sheet is April 27th.

C.A.S.T. Saturday Fix-It Brigade

The Fix-it Brigade is a program to do simple jobs around the homes of the elderly, disabled, frail, and people on a fixed income. The purpose is to help people who are unable to do necessary small projects due to physical or financial limitations. It is our hope that by helping others, we can show God's love in a tangible way.

The First Presbyterian Church of Beaver is in charge of this program and will be responsible for the supplies needed for the project.

The program takes place on a Saturday during the months of May through October, God willing.

If you know of someone that needs assistance or would like to volunteer to help out with this program, contact C.A.S.T at 847-4434 or see Julie Whalen for further details.

A representative from Rehoboth as well as the homeowner must be on-site on the Saturday that the Brigade is coming.

Examples of projects that the Brigade performs are: paint, patch interior walls, change light bulbs, fix porches, haul rubbish, wash outside windows, trim bushes, rake, trim along walks, hang drapery rods, minor plumbing jobs, small repairs such as door handles, hinges, door bells, and smoke alarms. They will NOT do major construction, major plumbing jobs, major electrical jobs, heavy cleaning, or go up on roofs.

C.A.S.T. Seed Earth Labor Food (SELF) Program

In March 1998, a gardening program entitled, "Take good care of your S.E.L.F." was started for people on low income to grow gardens. Penn State Extension Agricultural "Master Garderner" Program through Lee Miller, the Director, provides the piece of ground located up near Allencrest. The instructions for gardening are provided by Jim Irwin, a Master Gardener and volunteer. Donations and volunteers provide the seeds, tools, and transportation. The participants need only to labor to produce an abundance of vegetables. This program starts up after the last frost. If you are willing to donate gloves or other items or offer transportation, please contact C.A.S.T. at 775-8191 or send an email to Mary Jane at cast@access995.com.
