TSC Walkathon

TSC Alliance
Step Forward for a Cure
Saturday, June 26, 2010
Brady's Run Park, Brady's Run Lodge
Registration 1:00 PM
Walk begins 2:00 PM

Join us on Saturday, June 26, 2010 for a walkathon followed by a post-event celebration. Step Forward to Cure TSC is a national fundraising effort organized locally by the Western Pennsylvania area volunteers and families affected by tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). The Step Forward walkathon provides an opportunity to create awareness of TSC and raise funds for community support programs and research to find a cure. Over the past three years, the Western Pennsylvania walkathon has raised more than $60,000 with an average of 100 participants each year. These funds have allowed the TS Alliance to help researchers make some amazing strides in finding ways to slow the growth of TSC-related tumors. But it is only the beginning. More needs to be done, and we need your help to find a cure. The 4th Annual Western Pennsylvania walkathon offers a wonderful occasion for businesses and their employees to join together outside of the workplace with their families, co-workers, friends and clients to make a difference in their local community.

For further information contact Lori Shoup.

Joshua Shoup would like to thank all who helped to make my walk on June 26 a success.  We collected almost $13,000!  We had over 200 people, the weather was beautiful and we had lots of fun.  Thanks again for the support.

Mission Focus - LWR Health Kits

People who must flee their homes quickly often do not have time to pack essential items. Health kits can help refugees maintain personal hygiene while living in exile or help those who have been displaced by a natural disaster. Items may also contribute to a new start for those who can return home. During the month of May, the Mission Committee along with the Sunday School will collect items needed to assemble health kits for Lutheran World Relief (LWR). Please consider donating any of the needed items below:
Each health kit will include:

• One hand towel, dark color recommended
• One washcloth, dark color recommended
• One bath-size bar (4 to 5 oz.) of soap, any brand, in its original wrapping
• One adult-size toothbrush in its original packaging
• One sturdy comb, remove packaging
• One metal nail file or nail clippers with file attached, remove packaging (do not substitute cardboard emery boards for the file)
• Six Band-Aids® (or similar brand), preferably 1/2" to 3/4"; secure together with a rubber band

We cannot add other items or leave out any of the items listed. All items should be new and in good condition. Please place your donated items in one of the Mission baskets out in the narthex. Thank you for your continued support of our Mission projects.

Any other questions or concerns can be directed to anyone on the Mission Committee: Donna DuPont, Lori Shoup, Julie Whalen, and Pastor Eric.

MISSION FOCUS FOR APRIL: HAITI

Rehoboth will continue to focus on relief for Haiti during the month of April. Although our matching fund deadline with Thrivent Financial For Lutherans ended on March 31, 2010, we will still collect donations for the relief effort in Haiti.

Here’s how you can help:

Make a donation which will be sent to a relief organization to help with food, water, shelter, and sanitation.

Make LWR (Lutheran World Relief) quilts and health kits. Our quilting ladies are busy on Tuesday mornings making quilts to send to LWR and could always use more help. During the month of May, our Sunday School Project will be focused on making health kits so start saving hand towels, washcloths, bath-size bars of soap, sturdy combs, metal nail files or nail clippers with an attached file (no emery boards), and band-aids.

Say a prayer for the people of Haiti. Here’s an example:

Lord and Savior of the world, please be with the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti. Let them feel your presence through all the relief workers. Let each worker be your hands, and feet reaching out to a people in need. May those of us who are not able to help in person reach out financially, and also pray daily for the nation of Haiti. In your precious name I pray amen.

If you would like to help out financially, please put your money or check (made out to Rehoboth Lutheran Church) into a separate envelope and mark it Mission Committee: Haiti and the Mission Committee will make sure it gets to the proper relief organization.

Any other questions or concerns can be directed to anyone on the Mission Committee: Donna DuPont, Lori Shoup, Julie Whalen, and Pastor Eric.

Steel Drum Concert

Sunday, April 11th, 2010 at 4:00 PM.  The Ambridge Area High School Steel Drum Band performed an exclusive concert at Rehoboth to benefit the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA).

The concert started at 4:00 PM in the Sanctuary; following the concert, we had great food & gift basket raffles in the Fellowship Hall. If you came out, listened to some great music and supported a great cause, thank you. Several of our church members and their families suffer from these diseases. Contact Rich Insull with any questions.

BASKET RAFFLE DONATIONS:
$5 gift cards were collected to be placed in the baskets that were raffled after the Steel Drum concert on April 11th.

Gift cards were placed in the dedicated box in the narthex during March. Alternatively, we welcomed any donation of baskets full of goodies! Contact Rich Insull with any questions. All proceeds were donated to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. Thanks in advance for your donations!

The Insull family sold t-shirts to raise money for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA).  They were be in the fellowship hall after church services. The t-shirts were only $10 each and all proceeds were donated to the charity.  CCFA’s Mission is “To cure Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and to improve the quality of life of children and adults affected by these diseases.”  See Sarah with any questions or orders.

The steel drum concert was a huge success. The Ambridge High School Steel Drum Band (including church members Sarah & Nathan) gave a tremendous performance that was enjoyed by all. The food & decorations were great too.  A heartfelt "THANK YOU" goes out to all who helped plan, set up, cook, donate &  who participated.  Between Sarah's Senior Project (t-shirt sales), the concert and basket raffle, we raised over $1200 for the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA).

Mission Focus for December 2009

Christmas Giving Garland

Each December, the people of Rehoboth select a mission project to help out the needy.  Again this year, we have a great project to help out a local family in need.

Our project again is locally focused.  During December, a “Giving Garland” will once again be hung with tags attached listing a needed item that you may purchase. These items will be collected here at Rehoboth and will be donated to a needy family in this immediate area.  We ask that these items be wrapped and the garland tag be attached to the package so we can keep track of the items.

The family that we are helping out this year has recently moved into the area. They originally moved to this area to be with an ailing father/grandfather who has since passed away. This family consists of a mom, dad and five (5) children (two of which have autism). The father is currently ill and unable to work, but has done mission work in the past. The items on the giving garland will be items that the family has requested in addition to items to provide a Christmas dinner for their family.

Bright Beginnings Preschool will also be helping out with this mission project by providing Giant Eagle gift certificates and monetary donations.

We are asking that all items for this project be purchased or given by Sunday, December 20th. You may place you items in the mission basket out in the narthex or give them to anyone on the mission committee. If you have any questions, please contact anyone on the Mission Committee (Donna DuPont, Lori Shoup, or Julie Whalen). Thank you again for your support to help a family’s Christmas be a bit more merrier.

Sunday School Outreach Project May 2009 - Heifer International

During May of 2009, our Sunday School is doing an outreach project. We chose The Heifer Project. During the entire month of May, our Sunday School will collect money to help poverty-striken families by purchasing animals for them. Animals provide a multitude of benefits including food (i.e. eggs from chickens, milk from cows and goats, honey from bees, etc.), income from animal related products (they can sell their extra eggs, milk, honey, etc.), manure for growing crops, and the means to feed and support their families. Each family that is given an animal also gets training on caring for that animal and is required to give at least one of their offspring back into the project to benefit another family. The Heifer Project offers the following options for purchase:

Mission Focus for April 2009:

A Mother’s Voice: Lydia’s Place

Lydia’s Place located on Fifth Avenue in Pittsburgh helps female incarcerated offenders and their children rebuild their lives. Incarceration is often only a small part of a devastating set of life circumstances for female offenders and their families. A lack of support systems and coping skills, coupled with a history of abuse and mental illness lead many women into the vicious cycle of addiction and criminal activity. Most incarcerated women are mothers whose children suffer in a unique and significant way.

One way that Lydia’s Place is trying to help is through their A Mother's Voice project. This special project allows incarcerated mothers to read and record stories for their children. Each child receives a cassette tape and a copy of the book to keep. This project needs new or gently used children’s books, blank cassette tapes, tape players, padded envelopes and stamps. If you would like to donate these items, a basket is available out in the narthex to place your items.

Here is a suggested list of book titles:

  • Thomas the Train books
  • Bob the Builder Books
  • Dora the Explorer Books
  • Dr. Seuss Books
  • I Love You Forever by Robert Munsch
  • A Terrible Thing Happened by Margaret Holmes
  • Our Gracie Aunt by Jacqueline Woodson
  • What is Jail, Mommy? By Jackie A. Stanglin and Cierra Jade McGuckie
  • Visiting Day by Jacqueline Woodson and James Ransome
  • Victorian Doll House by Willabel L. Tong, Phil Wilson and Renee Jablow
  • Princess Palace by Piggie Toes Press and Jacqueline East

Lydia’s Place is also the 2009 Designated Outreach for the Women of the ELCA. These women will be collecting the following additional products throughout the 2009 year to support this outreach: women’s sample sized toiletries (such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, lotion, soap/bodywash, shampoo/conditioner), maxipads/tampons, women’s white socks (they want to collect a total of 300 pairs), regular sized bottles of lotion, bars of Dial soap (they want to collect 300 bars), large candy bars (Snickers, Hershey, or Milky Way – they want to collect 300), small packages of tissues, hand sanitizer, batteries (all sizes), diapers (all sizes), wipes, pens, pencils, composition books, new toys, craft supplies, 2 liter bottles of Coke and Diet Coke, bags of chips, pretzels, and cookies. Thank you for your support.

Mission Focus for Lent 2008: Habitat for Humanity

47 Bridge Street Beaver Falls, PA 15010 724/846-1630

www.beavercountyhabitat.org

Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. HFHI seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from the world, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.

Habitat for Humanity of Beaver County is Beaver County Pennsylvania's local Habitat affiliate. HFHBC was organized in 1992 and has completed 33 houses in Beaver County. HFHBC’s tithes to HFHI have funded the construction of over 54 houses overseas.

Their ReStore located at 47 Bridge Street Beaver Falls, PA sells quality used and surplus building materials at a fraction of normal prices. Proceeds from ReStore help fund the construction of Habitat houses in Beaver County.  Materials are usually donated from building supply stores, contractors, demolition crews or from individuals who wish to show their support for Habitat. In addition to raising funds, they help the environment by rechanneling good, usable materials into use. If you have items to donate to the ReStore, contact Joe at (724) 843-7939.

HFHBC receives no monies from Habitat for Humanity International. In fact, just as they require the families to give back to the community, they tithe 10% of undesignated contributions to Habitat for Humanity International for overseas Habitat construction.
