"Jacob's Road" in Concert

Hope Lutheran Church  (Cranberry Township, PA)  sponsored an evening filled with worship, praise, laughter and Christian community … and, it’s all FREE!

We marked your calendars for Saturday, October 3, 2009, as we welcomed Jacob’s Road, an amazing contemporary Christian rock band from Nashville. Doors opened at 7 p.m. and the concert began at 7:30 p.m. Because space was limited, we asked that interested youth groups act on this invitation right away to ensure that your group will be able to join us.

We wanted to lift others up who are in need and serve them as Jesus asks us to do. By working together to donate these items, we will all We had every member in the group bring at least one of the following: canned tuna or chicken, peanut butter, pasta, or cereal. These items benefited Gleaner’s Food Bank and allowed us to help meet the needs of others in our surrounding communities. We encouraged the youth to give generously!

Jacob's Road also ministered at the 5:00 pm church service on Saturday, October 3rd. Everyone was welcome to join us for this special service of worship and praise!

Concert Recap: (by Katarina)

On October 3rd, the youth of Rehoboth went out to Hope Lutheran Church in Cranberry Township to see Jacob’s Road in concert. They were very talented performers. Their names were Carrie, Mark, Josh, Kevin, and Peter. During the concert, one of the band members, Josh, told us a story with a valuable lesson: “We should let go of our baggage. God can take care of it.” He was a very funny and a great storyteller. The story was about the time that he, Josh, was a counselor when many kids were going hiking. He saw this little boy who was carrying a giant, heavy backpack about his same size. Josh asked the boy what was in the backpack, and the boy pulled out a 5 pound Ziploc bag full of Trail Mix. The boy pulled out two more bags full of trail mix, too. The boy did not trust Josh or the counselors. He thought that they wouldn’t take care of him, so he carried around all of this extra food. We are like the boy – we carry around all this baggage and we do not trust God. God can take care of us. We don’t need to carry around all of this extra stuff. It was a very nice story. The concert was great, and the music was good, too. The youth had a wonderful time watching Jacob’s Road play.

Youthfest is the synod-wide youth gathering for Lutheran youth in southwestern Pennsylvania. This 3-day retreat for 9th - 12th graders includes dynamic speakers and musicians, intimate small group experiences, moving worship, dancing, games, Christian fellowship, and hands-on service opportunities. Held annually in God's green Creation at Camp Lutherlyn, Youthfest is an opportunity for high school students to retreat from the pressures of everyday life and experience an intentional Christian community.

What does the story of the Good Samaritan have to do with race relations in high school? What does "love your enemies" mean in the age of terrorism? The answer--- a lot, but how many of us are connecting the dots between real faith and real life on a daily basis? Join us at Youthfest for live music, dynamic speakers, outdoor games, worship, group building, and an exploration of how God's Word is relevant in today's youth culture.

NEW THIS YEAR! Youthfest "Dot Shops" are a brand new forum for delving deep into what it means to be a Lutheran Christian in today's contemporary culture. "Dot Shops" are small group discussions where you get to choose the topics that most connect with you. Shop themes include:

Bible Bowl 2009

This year’s local Bible Bowl was held on Sunday, February 22, 2009. The location was Grace Lutheran Church in Rochester. We studied the Gospel of Matthew. Rehoboth’s team will be made up of youth from 6th grade through 12th grade. The youth asked our congregation for their support in the form of developing questions based on the Gospel of Matthew. The Bible Bowl team also needed some volunteers to provide lunches for our team during the months of January and February. There was a luncheon sign-up sheet in the narthex. If you were interested in formulating questions or assisting the Bible Bowl team in any way, your help was greatly appreciated. The Bible Bowl team typically practices on Sundays following worship during the months of January and February. Our first practice was January 4th. Our Bible Bowl leader is Scott Shoup.

On Sunday, February 22, thirteen of Rehoboth's youth entered Grace Lutheran Church with high hopes, tension and nervousness.  Our prayer prior to the start was for humbleness, to open our hearts and minds to receive God's word and for all to enjoy the event.  Rehoboth went head-to-head against:  Christ, Baden; Grace, Rochester; St. Andrew, Moon and New Hope, Economy.  We completed the first round one point behind, rallied in the second half and took the lead to win in the third round.  They did it!

The questions were difficult this year, but our group prevailed.  A woman from Grace in Rochester approached Coach Shoup to say that our group of kids were to be commended.  She commented that our team was actually "quoting from the bible" not just giving one-word answers, which to her, meant that they truly studied the scripture.

Many thanks to the 35+ congregational members that came to cheer on the team.  To those who took time to write questions for the students, prepared a luncheon and encouraged the group,  THANK YOU.  And also, to Coach Shoup and Coach Tide (Heidi Hartge) we say "thanks bunches"!  Congratulations, we're so proud of you.

Our next competition was scheduled for Sunday, March 1 at 2:45 PM at New Hope, Economy.  We competed against 3 other local winning teams. The competition proved to be tough and we came in third place. Congratuations to our Bible Bowl participants.

Our youth are victorious -- having read and studied the book of Matthew -- for that we are proud.
