COUNCIL MINUTES
Tuesday, May 14, 2008
MEMBERS PRESENT: Gil Baker, Donna DuPont, Rob Hicks, Tom Kuny, Carol Nicoletti, Dee Phillips, Bill Slingluff, Karen Szatkiewicz
MEMBERS ABSENT: Royce Wilhelm and Debbie Jasinski, Treasurer
The Rev. Lawrence Camberg, Interim pastor, was in attendance.
Opening Devotions – Rob lead the devotions, “Emptiness and Fullness – Complete Opposites.” Gil will lead for June.
Secretary’s Report – Rob made a motion to accept the Secretary’s Report with the following correction – Confirmation was held on Sunday, May 11, not 12th. Seconded. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report – Debbie Jasinski
- Giving is down.
- The report will be filed for audit.
Pastor’s Report – Pastor Camberg presented handouts with his expenses and time listed. Sam and Jessica Ward contacted Pastor Camberg regarding the baptism of their new baby, Emma Grace, on June 8th. Bill made a motion to accept Pastor Camberg’s report. Seconded. Motion carried.
Committee Reports
Property – Gil Baker
- Donna reported that Don’s Organ Repair from Bellevue tuned the organ. However, she will continue to search for a repairperson that is familiar with the Rodger Model 755. There is one stop (Octave), which has a chirp, and Don was unable to locate the problem.
- Gil will purchase 12 bags of mulch and Preen for the front of the church.
- The boiler was repaired, mirrors were installed in the Library and the light fixture in one of the stairwells was repaired.
- Workday will be held on Saturday, June 7 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
- Discussion was held regarding the door locks and keys to the church. Bill reported that we would need three tumblers for the doors at the cost of $80.00 each. We will need approx. 22 keys at $6.00 each. Keys will be numbered and a log will be kept. Keys will be distributed according to positions within the church. Bill will contact Guzyk Lock Safe and Security Co., Ambridge for an accurate cost.
Mission – Donna
- Donna reported that TerraCotta has stopped collecting 20 oz. bottles for recycling. They are in need of sponsors for the postage. When sponsors are found, recycling will resume. We will receive a notice when this occurs.
Unfinished Business
Call Committee – Tom
- Tom will prepare the ballot with five names on it. Rob is the Council Rep. and therefore, a given. Total number on committee is six.
Building Expansion
- A congregational meeting has been set for May 18th following the worship service to present handouts to the congregation. Carol volunteered to make copies of the design for each family to peruse. The congregation will be asked to give their comments/changes in writing.
- Carol questioned if the Finance Committee of the church needed to be involved. It was determined that it was not necessary.
- Bill will request an electronic copy from the architect and forward to Tom. Tom will enlarge the drawings for presentation.
Summer Bible Study –
- Dennis Whalen has graciously agreed/offered to structure and teach a Summer Bible Study. Tom distributed a copy of the planned study.
- Study will be held on Wednesday evening from 7:00 – 8:15 p.m.
- Council is in full support of the study and schedule.
New Business
Capital Appeals
- Carol presented “Stewardship Key Leader” handouts to council for their review with comments to be discussed at the June meeting.
Handchime Lending Program
- Julie Whalen and Pam Zatchey have looked into a Handchime Lending Program. This program would lend Rehoboth the handchimes from September 1, 2008 to June 1, 2009 for the cost of shipping - $100.00 total. Dee questioned insurance coverage. They are covered in the church policy. Carol made a motion that Julie and Pam proceed with acquiring the handchimes. Seconded. Motion carried.
Synod Assembly
- Synod Assembly will be held June 19-21, 2008 at Thiel College, Greenville, PA. Carol made a motion to send Tom and Lorrie Kuny as voting members with Sam and Heather Goncz as alternates. Seconded. Motion carried.
FYI - Families Moving
- Donna reported that three families from Rehoboth would be moving in the near future. They are:
Stefen, Heike and Lisa Drees - Germany
Jay, Yvonne and Celine Humphrey – NH
Henry (Joe) and Linda Penfield - Traveling
- Discussion was held regarding a “Send Off” service/luncheon.
Constitution – Rev. Kurt Bish, Assistant to the Bishop
- Pastor Bish presented each member of council with a copy of the Model Constitution for ELCA Congregations. He explained that the constitution is divided into two sections. The Required section which must have an * and cannot be changed and the Non-Required Section.
- He also explained there are four types of members: Baptized, Confirmed, Voting and Associate.
- He reviewed the 14 page document explaining the changes and deletions.
- Tom, Carol and Donna will meet to make the necessary changes to the By-Laws that were recommended by Pastor Bish. (Congregation meeting, not congregational) Also, Article 4 needs changed and Resolutions – Congregation Council not Church.
Adjourn – Bill made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Seconded. Motion carried.
