COUNCIL MINUTES
Sunday, August 19, 2007
MEMBERS PRESENT: Tom Kuny, Pres.; Gil Baker, Donna DuPont, Carol Nicoletti, Dee Phillips, Bill Slingluff, Pastor Scott, Royce Wilhelm and Debbie Jasinski, Treasurer
ABSENT: Allan Berenbrok, V. Pres.; Karen Szatkiewicz
Opening Devotions – Pastor Scott lead council in prayer. Gil is responsible for devotions at the September meeting.
Correspondence and Requests – None
Secretary’s Report
- Bill made a motion to accept the Secretary’s report. Seconded. Motion carried.
Treasurer’s Report
- Debbie reported the Columbia Gas bills as follows: June $535.00, July $80 and Aug. 0. Our budget amount will reflect on the September bill.
- We have never been financially ahead at this time of the calendar year in years.
- All bills have been paid and are not expecting anything out-of-the-ordinary.
- Debbie will contact Julie Whalen regarding the address where the check for the “Fish Money” to be sent.
- Treasurer’s report will be filed for audit.
Pastor’s Report
- Pastor gave an oral report,
- He thanked council and the congregation for their prayers, support and kindness shown to his family upon the recent medical report regarding his mother.
- VBS had 89 in attendance. The highest number thus far.
- Performed two funerals for members: Carol Bruninghous and Elnora Dunlap.
- Unable to contact Pastor Newpher. Tom will attempt to contact him while Pastor is in MN for his mother’s surgery.
- September 9th is Rally Day.
- Has one wedding in September and two in October.
- Rev. Janice Altenberger is our contact pastor when Pastor goes out-of-town. He will be gone from Aug. 22 or 23 until Thursday, September 6th.
- Bishop Mark Hansen has been re-elected Bishop of the ELCA Churchwide. He was elected on the second ballot.
- Pastor Kirk Bish has agreed to stay-on as the Assistant to the Bishop for two more years. Pastor Sandy Kessinger has agreed to a six year term. Pastor Martha Clementson will be moving to another synod.
Committee Reports
Property – Gil Baker
- Gil reported that an old Church marker sign has been refurbished and will replace the sign at the Conway Wallrose Rd. and Big Sewickley Creek junction.
- Bill reported that a workday was held and the parking lots were cleaned up and several sumac trees were cut down.
- A large hanging branch in the outdoor chapel area needs to be removed. Someone could be seriously injured if it hits him or her.
- Bill also asked what we should do about the status on the emergency generator/updating emergency lights.
Bright Beginnings – Carol Nicoletti
- Heidi Hartge was elected chairperson of BB Board.
- Carol recruited Heike Drees to serve on the BB Board. Council voted unanimously to accept her appointment.
- Carol reported that BB is down in enrollment
- They have decreased Field Trip expenses and teacher salaries will not be increased.
- They have $2,000 in their savings account and will be able to meet their budget. However, they cannot assume any additional expenses.
Music & Worship – Norma Baker
- Norma requested that council approve ordering the new hymnals in time for use on Reformation Sunday even though we have not reached our goal. Orders are coming in weekly and the committee feels that we may reach our goal by the time the books arrive. Bill made a motion to proceed with the purchase of the remaining hymnals for $3,100. Seconded. Motion carried. As of today, we have 124 books paid for.
Unfinished Business
Thrivent
- Tom handed-out the Associate Member forms to council. This will assist Rehoboth in receiving funding. Tom will contact Roger Steiner for more forms to be given to members in the congregation and submit an article for the newsletter and bulletin.
New Business
Memorial Committee Chairperson
- A new Chairperson of the Memorial Committee needs to be appointed. Heide Hartge, Chairperson, was elected the new chairperson of the Bright Beginnings Board. Heidi would like to devote her time to Bright Beginnings.
Changing Tables for the Restrooms
- Dee will gather the information necessary to proceed with purchase.
Emergency Lights
- Cost approx. $1,000 - $1,500 – Bill will look into this.
AED
- Tom is researching potential funding to assist in purchasing the equipment. Pastor commented that Donna Pfeifer is a certified instructor via the American Red Cross.
Security Cam
- Pastor Scott would like to have one installed at the front door.
Property Procedures in Emergency Situations
- Pastor will write an article for the newsletter regarding procedures for members to follow when an emergency situation regarding the church/property is involved.
Point of Interest
- Pastor Scott reported that anyone who does not have access to Excel might go into www.openoffice.org for free and retrieve their Excel documents.
- Royce inquired about requests regarding freestanding monuments in the new cemetery and whom he should talk with. Pastor commented that the Cemetery Assoc. is a separate entity from the church, so the Cemetery Assoc. should be contacted. Royce will follow up.
Next Meeting
- Council will meet on Tuesday, September 18, 2007 at 8:00 p.m.
Motion to Adjourn – Bill made a motion to adjourn. Seconded. Motion carried. Meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
