Week 5
“I am thirsty.”
NAU Matthew 27:48-49 | NAU Mark 15:36 | John 19:28-29 |
48 Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. 49 But the rest of them said, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to save Him." | 36 Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, "Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down." | 28 ¶ After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, "I am thirsty." 29 A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon a branch of hyssop and brought it up to His mouth. |

EXERCISE
1. Crucifixion was a most horrible method of execution and extreme dehydration played an excruciating (note the word) role. Do you believe that Christ’s statement of “thirst” was a request to quench his thirst, a desire to “drink the cup before him”, or something else? Do you believe it was all of these?
2. Last week we discussed whether or not you have felt forsaken by God. Have you ever “thirsted” like the Psalmist?
3. At first glance, the fifth word from Christ on the cross doesn’t seem like anything more than a plea for hydration. Christ’s ministry began with severe hunger (fasting in the wilderness) and is now ending with severe thirst. Do you find any significance in this?
