This education program called “Back to Basics” contains 17 lists from the Bible for our children to memorize. Also included are the Lord’s Prayer and the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds for a total of 20 different memorization tasks. These tasks have been broken up into 4 different levels in order of increasing complexity. Each study section outlines what each child must do in order to complete each level and move on to the next.
Who can participate? This program is setup for the children in Nursery through 6th grade. However, if there are children in 7th through 12th grades that want to participate they will be more than welcome. Even the adult bible study, friendship, and CIC classes are welcome!
What can you as a parent or guardian do to help? It’s easy! Use the study section included on our website and pick a single task and work with your child. Since the tasks are ordered in increasing complexity, it is recommended that you go through them in sequence. Help your child to memorize the information necessary to complete that one task. Once your child can recite the information to you (and even their Sunday School teacher), you may move onto the next task. Your child can try as many times as they want to complete each task. Once your child has completed a task, work with them on the next one. As the tasks for a Level are completed, your child may work on the next level’s study section. Everyone can start with Level 1.
Why should your child participate? Well, there are certain things we promised to teach our children when they were baptized. We promised to teach them the Ten Commandments, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Lord’s Prayer. These three are included in this program. The other information contained in this program only helps them to better understand the Bible and what Jesus Christ has done for all of us. Also, you’ll notice that this program concentrates on Nursery through the 6th grade. That is because Rehoboth’s catechism starts in 7th grade. 7th grade is a time for our children to understand this information. The information taught at the 7th grade level would mean so much more to the child if they already have memorized it or knew where to find the additional information in the Bible.
