Did You Know?

Who sentenced Jesus to death?

Let’s start out with a tricky one.   Most of us would respond, Pilate sentence Jesus to death, but that is not the case.  The High Priest, Caiaphas, along with the elders and chief priests were plotting to sentence Jesus to death (Matthew 26:3-4, Matthew 26:59, Matthew 27:1).  Since the land was under the rule of Rome, the governor, Pontius Pilate, had to provide the orders for capital punishment.  Therefore, Caiaphas “sentenced” Jesus to death and Pilate permitted and ordered it.

Who wrote almost half of the books of the New Testament?

Out of the 27 books in our New Testament, Paul is credited with writing 13 of them (Romans, 1st & 2nd Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1st & 2nd Thessalonians, 1st & 2nd Timothy, Titus, and Philemon)

What was written on the cross above Jesus’ head?  In how many language?

The Gospel writers focus on different aspect of the sign about Jesus’ head and therefore, record similar, but not exactly the same words.  Traditionally, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews” (John 19:19) is understood to be the “title” given by Pilate.  In Latin, this would be written as “Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum”, which is where INRI comes from.  Matthew’s and Mark’s account focus on the “accusation”, why Jesus was condemned.  Ironically, His crime was not a crime at all, but an absolute statement of truth.  (Matthew 27:37, Mark 15:26, Luke 23:38, and John 19:19).  The inscription was written by Pilate in three different languages, Hebrew (or Aramaic, the main language of the religious authorities and many Jews), Latin (the language of Rome), and Greek (the language of the common people) (John 19:20)

Which prophet accused King David of murder?

Nathan was a prophet and knew that King David killed Uriah the Hittite and then had an affair with his wife, Bathsheba. Nathan told David a story, “A rich man with lots of sheep stole the only lamb a poor man owned.  This lamb was the poor man’s pet, but the rich man stole the lamb and killed it, and cooked it for supper.”  David responded, “A man like this deserves to die!”  Nathan answered, “You are that man!” (2 Samuel 12:1-14)

What was the “writing on the wall” of King Belshazzar?  What did it mean?

King Belshazzar had a feast and they began drinking out of the vessels that were taken from the temple in Jerusalem.  Suddenly, a hand appeared and began writing on the wall, “MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN”.  Daniel interpreted the writing for the King, “God has numbered your kingdom and put an end to it, you have been weighed on the scales and found deficient, your kingdom has been divided and given to the Medes and Persians”.  (Daniel 5:1-31).  That night, King Belshazzar was slain and Darius the Mede received his kingdom.

Who tried to kill baby Jesus?

King Herod the Great attempted to kill baby Jesus by ordering the killing of all males under the age of two (Matthew 2:13-18).  There were many generations of kings named Herod.  For example, Herod Antipas ordered the beheading of John the Baptist.

Who was the mother of Israel’s wisest king, Solomon?

David’s wife, Bathsheba, gave birth to the wisest king, Solomon (2 Samuel 12:24)

Name two people of the Bible that did not die.

Two people of the Bible had a very special fate.  The first, Enoch, walked with God.  The Bible then tells us that God “took him” (Genesis 5:24 and restated in Hebrews 11:5).  The second was Elijah, the prophet.  Elijah was taken up by a whirlwind to heaven (2 Kings 2:11)

Who was the meanest queen of the Bible?

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the meanest of them all?  Jezebel was the meanest queen of all.  Read about all her hatred and evil in 1 Kings 18 through 21.  Even the great prophet Elijah ran for his life from her.  Her violent death was foretold and is recorded in 2 Kings 9.  The cleaned up prophecy is this, “the dogs shall eat her flesh and lick her blood and her corpse shall be as dung on the face of the field so that she will be unrecognizable.”  Ultimately, she is thrown out the window and fulfills her prophesy.

Name the 7 that were at the transfiguration.

Trick question.  Matthew, Mark, and Luke all write about the transfiguration.  Interestingly enough, John, who was there, does not.  Jesus (1), took Peter (2), James (3), and John (4) with him up the mountain to pray.  While on the mountain, Moses (5) and Elijah (6) appeared.  If that weren’t stunning enough, a bright cloud overshadowed them and a voice (7) came from the cloud saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him!” (Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-10, and Luke 9:28-36)

What teenager got sold as a slave because he tattled and bragged too much?

All of Rehoboth’s Rejoicing Rascals should get this one.  Good old Joseph was a tattletale and braggart.  Finally, his brothers just got tired of it and sold him into slavery.  Genesis 37:12-36

What body of water did Jesus walk on?

Another tricky question that requires a little bit of sleuthing.  According to Matthew 14:22-36, Jesus walked on the water to the boat His disciples were in.  Verse 34 is the key to the puzzle, “they landed at Gennesaret”.  Gennesaret is located on the west side of the Sea of Galilee.  Also found in Mark 6:45-52 and John 6:16-21.

Who destroyed Jerusalem and ended the Jewish nation?

Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, used his army to wipe out Israel.  Nothing was left standing, not even Jerusalem.  He even deported the Jews and took the vessels from the temple back to his home country of Babylon.  Everything was laid to waste. (2 Kings 24)

Who had a talking donkey?

Yes, I know that the answer is Shrek, but since this is a Bible Q&A, we’re talking about Balaam’s donkey. (Numbers 22:22-40).  While his donkey was keeping Balaam out of trouble, Balaam struck the donkey three times.  Finally, the donkey said, “What have I done to you?”

Who was the first person that was killed for teaching others about Jesus?

Luke continues to write about the apostles teaching in the Book of Acts.  In Acts 7:54-8:1, Luke writes about the first Christian martyr, Stephen, who was stoned to death.  Stephen has a fantastic speech of faith in Acts 7:1-53.
